Sonata for Piccolo & Piano

990 ฿

Sonata for Piccolo and Piano blends Thai Isaan folk influences with contemporary expression. Though titled “Sonata,” it freely explores the classical sonata sections—Exposition, Development, Recapitulation, and Coda—highlighting motifs from traditional melodies like Nok Iang Yiap Kon Khee Thai and Lao Joi. The work showcases the textures of the khaen, voad (bamboo flute), and piccolo, capturing the lively, improvisatory spirit of Isaan music. Commissioned by Kalaya Phongsathorn, it premiered at PGVIM and has been performed internationally, including at the NFA Convention in the U.S.

This piece is titled “Sonata” to suggest the spirit of thematic development, though it does not strictly follow the classical sonata form. Its structure consists of four broad sections—Exposition, Development, Recapitulation, and Coda—treated freely and with a contemporary approach.

The opening (A–K) introduces motifs influenced by the vibrant sound world of Thai Isaan folk music, particularly the khaen and the voad (bamboo flute), along with melodies from traditional songs such as “นกเอี้ยงเหยียบก้อนขี้ไถ” (Nok Iang Yiap Kon Khee Thai) and “ลาวจ้อย” (Lao Joi). The Development (L–Q) extends and transforms these motifs, capturing the playful character of the folk music. The Recapitulation (R–T) revisits these themes in a more fragmented and fluid way, before concluding with a Coda (U) that echoes the distinctive closing flourish typical of khaen performances.

Rather than relying on classical sonata key relationships and dual-theme structures, this work emphasizes the textures and colors of the khaen and voad, integrated with the piccolo’s bright and agile voice. It reflects the improvisatory spirit and energy of Isaan music.

Commissioned by Kalaya Phongsathorn, a prominent piccolo player with the Royal Bangkok Symphony Orchestra, this piece had its world premiere at the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music (PGVIM), performed by Kalaya Phongsathorn and the composer himself at the piano. It has since been performed in various settings, including at the 53rd Annual National Flute Association Convention in the United States, where Kalaya played alongside pianist Sumida Ansvananda. Kalaya has also recorded this work on Thai Contemporary Music for Flutes, an album featuring modern Thai compositions.
