Wiwat Suthiyam

Wiwat Suthiyam was born on 20 October 1989. He began studying piano at the age of 7 at Siam Kollakarn Music Academy. At 15, he won third prize at the Yamaha competition, and the following year, he returned to win second prize. From a young age, however, he was also drawn to composition. He later enrolled in the undergraduate program at the College of Music, Mahidol University, where he studied composition with Prof. Valeriy Rizayev and continued his piano studies with Dr. Nopanand Chanorathaikul.

In 2011, he composed Cleopatra: The Musical for the stage. He attended masterclasses with renowned composers such as Eric Ewazen and performed his piece Himmaparn Suite. He was awarded a Distinguished Prize in the 2011 Young Thai Artist Awards for his composition Prelude for Three Poems. The following year, he received the Grand Prize in the same competition with Le Scaphandre et le Papillon.

Wiwat’s music is influenced by the Impressionists. He focuses on colour, timbre, and orchestration, using complex harmonies and extended techniques to create vivid atmospheres. He is also deeply interested in Asian and Thai traditional music, often blending it with Western instruments to explore new sonic possibilities.

He has participated in the Thailand International Composition Festival and has received commissions from the Mahidol Wind Orchestra, Tacet(i) Ensemble, and the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. Currently, he teaches piano privately, composes at SoundGood’s Piano Studio, and serves as Arranger-in-Residence at the Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music.
