6 Character Pieces for Piano is a collection of original piano works inspired by traditional Thai
themes and folk tunes. Each piece blends the charm of Thai musical heritage with contemporary
harmony and pianistic textures, while preserving classical style. The music reflects influences from
early 20th-century composers such as Rachmaninoff, Ravel, Prokofiev, Poulenc, Webern, and
Lutoslawski. Each piece carries a unique mood and character.
1. Lao Duang Duen – Arabesque
A beloved Thai melody composed in 1907 by Prince Pichai Mahintarodom. In this setting, the tune is
shaped into an expressive Arabesque with flowing lines, lush harmonies, and delicate
ornamentation, echoing the romantic style of Rachmaninoff with the Japanese anime’s sound colors.
2. Ratree Pradap Dao – Nocturne
This melody comes from an old Thai song called Mon Du Dao and was recomposed by King Rama
VII, this serene melody is reimagined as a gentle Nocturne in the French Impressionist style. Radiant
textures and ambiguous harmonies veil the original theme, drawing inspiration from Ravel’s
Miroirs.
3. Khang Khok Pak Sa – Scherzo
A playful Thai traditional tune of unknown origins, transformed into a frisky Scherzo. The piece
features unexpected leaps, bold dissonances, and rhythmic wit, in the style of Prokofiev’s piano writing.
4. Lao Long Nan – Chorale and Canon
A folk melody from Northern Thailand reflecting life and journeys along the river. The first section
presents a warm, hymn-like chorale with chromatic harmonies, which transitions into a graceful canon until the end.
5. Khab Mai Bandatho – Toccata
An ancient ceremonial lull from the Sukhothai period, reinterpreted as an energetic Toccata. The
music alternates between aggressive passages and lyrical, peaceful mood, culminating in a vibrant
and powerful ending.
6. Toey Khong – 12 Variations for Two Pianos
A cheerful Isaan folk tune, often sung during traditional dances. This adaptation presents the
melody through twelve variations, each with its own tone and character. This piece is inspired by
the variations on Paganini’s 24th Caprice by Rachmaninoff and Lutosławski.
