The Sonata for Oboe and Piano is inspired by the melodies of the Thai classical composition “Klom Naree,” written by National Artist Kru Montree Tramote. It is based on the renowned Thai literary work “Phra Aphai Mani” by poet Sunthorn Phu.   The oboe, known for its resonant sound, shares similarities with the Thai traditional instrument called the “Pi.” In “Phra Aphai Mani,” the Pi is played by the maincharacter, Phra Aphai Mani, to captivate and allure Nang La-weng. Throughout the story, the Pi is also used for deception, harm, protection, inducing sleep, and even in battle, with more than 13 times of Pi-playing. Thus, I have incorporated melodies from the “Klom Naree” composition as the main theme in this sonata.   The sonata consists of three movements that blend Thai melodies with Western classical music. The oboe assumes the role of the Pi and is developed alongside the piano throughout the composition. The first movement is lively, with the melodies from “Klom Naree” in bar 15. Here, I have taken the original melodic motifs and expanded upon them in my own interpretation. The second movement is a slower section that retains the original melodies but introduces modified embellishments, adding a touch of sweetness and allure. The composition begins with a familiar motif and gradually enriches the arrangement to deepen the emotional impact. In the lively third movement, the Sonata incorporates the Thai musical style “Pi Phat,” blending traditional Thai techniques with a contemporary harmonic framework.   This composition composed for Nuttha Kuankajorn’s performance at the International Double Reed Society 2023.
